IT'S BEEN A WHILE!

I was just looking at my blog and realized that i haven't updated it in 3 months. Wow life goes by fast doesn't it. Too fast.

As you may know I have opened an office in Pleasant Grove, UT only 5 minutes from home. I am loving the commute. The gym is 5 min from the office and everything I need is close to home. I love it. More time for family, church, friends, patients, and weight loss clients.

Due to the summer I have slowed down my weight loss consulting but it is time to get in full swing again. School is starting, vacations are over and people are getting back to "normal" life. With that it is a great time to lose weight.

The Biggest Loser

Last night was the season finale of The Bigges Loser. I must admit it is one of my favorite shows.

I think it is because it is a show that changes peoples lives for the better. Not only those on the show but it is a motivation to those who watch it.

This year a 48 year old woman won the competition. She lost over 54% of her body weight. That is amazing.

I hear all the time how men lose weight so much easier and quicker than men. But the last 3 winners on The Bigges Loser were women. Now a 48 year old woman. It just shows you that anyone can do whatever they set their mind to. Here is a link to pic's of Helen, the winner.

GREAT WEEKEND!

I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day!

I did. I woke up and made my wife breakfast, with help from my kids. I also made her dinner and let her take a nap after church. It was a fun day. I hope all the Mom's out there had a great day.

On Saturday I had a fun day as well. I got a call on Friday night to go water skiing with a good friend of mine, on Saturday monring.

We met at 6:30 am and went to Utah lake. It was sooooo cold. The outside air when we met wat 34 degrees. The water temp was probably 50 degrees. Thank goodness I had a dry suit. So all that got wet was my hands, feet, and head.

Here is what I really loved about this. I haven't been waterskiing in 2 years. This was mainly due to my achilles tendon injury and surgery. Well the last time I went skiing before I tore it I was almost 15 pounds heavier than I am now.

Well needless to say that water skiing at a lighter weight was so much easier. I got up faster and was able to ski longer. It was really great.

One thing I am really enjoying about losing weight is that I am finding it easier to do things now than when I was 40 pounds heavier. Life is easier. It is easier to run, play sports, fit into clothes, go up and down stairs... You get the picture. So what are you waiting for. Summer is so close. You can feel it in the air.

Mark Your Calendar's

On Thursday April 16 I will be hosting two Take Shape For Life and Medifast Weighloss orientation's and food tasting's. I have had so many people talk to me over the past few days about friends and family who might be interested in starting an effective simple weight loss program, that I have decided to have 2 orientations in my office next Thursday. Daddy Daughter Date!

So this was a fun weekend with Easter and all.

Friday night I took my 2 cute little girls, LibbyAnne 4 and Makenzie 6, on a Daddy daughter date.

Well before I started Medifast my wife bought me a new pair of pants. I tried them on and laughed because I thought there was nooo way I would ever wear them, even when I lost the weight I needed to lose.

Well they are nice pants so I decided that it had been 4 weeks since I tried them on and 3 1/2 weeks since being on the program so i tried them on. To my utter disbelief, THEY FIT!!

I couldn't believe it. I knew I could get into them sooner or later in the waist but I thought they were too small in the legs to ever fit. Well in only 3 1/2 weeks they fit. It was a great day and fun to see. Then I had a great night with my little girls.

I have now registered to run the St. George marathon in October. I said Iwould never run again but I am feeling better than I have in years and when I get to my goal weight I will be 30 pounds less then when I ran it the first time. I think it will be so much easier to run 26.2 miles carrying 30 less pounds. So I am going at it again. I am really excited.

WEEK 3 COMES TO AN END!

So I have now finished week 3. Here are the stats:

Total Weight Loss 26lb's
Body Fat: 18.8%
BMI: 30

Overall this past week my weight loss slowed down. But no one can keep up 10 POUNDS a week and so this was expected. I also went to Boise, ID as my previous post said. I spent time with family and had 2 meals that were off the program. However I enjoyed them, didn't OVEREAT and then got right back on track the very next meal. That is the key to anyone. Esspecially with Easter coming up.

Enjoy Easter dinner. Have fun and enjoy the food with your family. Then get right back on the program immediatly. You won't have any adverse affects from one meal. Just don't over eat. Have small portions and fill up on the veggies and not the carbs and fats.

I am very excited with where everyone I am working with is at with their weight loss. They are doing great. Our Current Health Care System! Or should I say "Sick" Care!

This weekend I traveled up to Boise, Idaho to attend a educational seminar on Take Shape For Life and Medifast Meals weight loss system.

I got to listen to co-founder and Medical Director of Medifast, Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen. He graduated first in his class in med school, was the 10th physician licsened in critical care, and was a pioneer in critical care and intensive care. For years he treated people who were at the end of their journey, many of which were there prematurely. He saw a glaring weakness in our current medical system and how it treats patients. That is why he started Take Shape For Life. He realized that giving people medications didn't fix the problem. It just suppressed symptoms for a time and then caused greater problems in the future.

Most of us start out at 5-10 pounds over weight. If we eat only 500 calories more than we burn each week we will gain 7.5 pounds a year. That doesn't sound like much but in 10 years it is 75 pounds. 20 years it is 150 pounds. 500 calories isn't very much. It ends up being 2 oreo cookies everyday. That's it.

Then as we age and are overweight problems start to occur. First we buy over the counter meds. Things for indegestion or joint pain. Then it gets worse and we get prescription meds for the indegestion. Then it leads to cholesterol meds, high blood pressure, Type II diabetes and so on. All of this can be prevented. QUICK UPDATE

9 POUNDS! That is what I have lost in only 5 days of the Medifast program. I couldn't believe it when I jumped on the scale yesterday. I am already noticing that some pants are fitting better and I am tightening my belts one extra notch. I am going to post a new pic tomorrow but I just wante to update.

Couple things from the first few days. It was harder than I thought. I must have really been carb addicted. I had a low grade headache and fatigue for about 2 1/2 days. Now I feel great. No problems and only get hungry when it is time to eat. I have found that all the food is good. The oatmeal needs a little help to be palatable but is decent. Otherwise I am really getting good momentum and can't wait to keep you all updated.

The "Scary" Reality

So here it is. My first day using Medifast and Take Shape for Life. I am going to be documenting my journey so I am going to be wide open with this process. First as you can see from the picture, not a "pretty" sight. But here are the stats:
  • Height 6' 2"
  • Weight 268 lb's (Most I have weighed since playing college football)
  • Body Fat 22% (My best has been 10%)
  • BMI 34.4 (10 points higher than it should be)
  • Waist 40"

Here is what my goals are in the next 8 weeks.

  1. Weightloss 45 lb's
  2. Body fat at 12% or less
  3. Waist 36"
  4. Training for a triathalon.

Just so everyone knows this is the worst I have ever looked and felt. About 2 years ago I tore my achilles tendon. It took me over 1 year to get back to exercising like I could before. The problem was though I had gained quite a bit of weight and had some very bad habbits. So even after I started exercising again i stilled gained weight. I know that my story is similar to many. Whether it is an injury that starts it or pregnancy or something else. The important thing though is what are we doing to change it. Are we just "hoping" that it will "magically" improve without doing anything different. Suprisingly I lived like that for a period of time. I now realize there isn't a magic pill. John Hopkins University Study on Medifast

Johns Hopkins University Nutrition and Health Research Clinics studied weightloss using Medifast meals. The results were astounding. They found that Men lost an average of 67 POUNDS and Women lost an average of 47 POUNDS. They also had a significant reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglycerides, and the normalization of blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Congrats!

Congrats to all those who are finishing their first month on TSFL and to the weight they have lost. I now have the privelage of working with 10 people towards their health goals. They had the courage to do something and do something NOW!

TIME FOR A CHANGE!!

I have been reading a great book lately, "Tribes" by Seth Godin. This book is about leadership and the need for leadership right now. It is time for all of us to stand up and lead, make a change in our own lives, our families, and friends. If we start helping those we know and have influence with then we can change our families,communities, country, and the world.

Obesity and being overweight is an epedemic in this country, and we as Americans are leading the world in that direction. Do we want our children and grandchildren to have shorter lives than us, riddled with health problems because we didn't take care of ourselves or try to help them to learn how to live healthy lives.

The time is NOW. Make a goal to get healthy, lose weight, and exercise. Tell your family about your goals, then DO IT!! If you wait till tomorrow or next month then you will never start, becasue tomorrow never comes. EVER.

Research on TSFL and Medifast

So we have many of my practice member's who are working to get their lives back by using Medifast Meals and Take Shape For Life program. Here a some great studies that prove the effectiveness of this program:

• The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Nutrition and Health
Research Clinic: Multicenter Evaluation of Health Benefits and Weight Loss On the Medifast
Weight Management Program.

The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of a medically supervised, protein-supplemented, modified fasting program for weight reduction and to evaluate the impact of weight reduction on coexisting health problems. The center selected Medifast products (Medifast 55 and Medifast 70) to provide the protein and calorie requirements necessary for the study. Researchers conducted an investigation of randomly selected patient charts from Medifast clinics across the nation. The study was comprised of predominately white, middle-aged females who had completed the Medifast program. The results of the study concluded that medically supervised, protein-sparing, modified fasts offer a safe and effective means of weight reduction and are accompanied by significant improvements in coexisting health problems. Of the samples taken, males lost an average of 67 pounds and females lost an average of 47 pounds during fasting. The study found significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as the normalizing of blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Obesity Epidemic

Over 66% of American's are considered obese. At our current trends of increasing weight gain as a population, experts predict by 2022 over 80% will be overweight. Plus obesity is one of the leading causes of almost all major health problems:

First Event.

On Wednesday January 21 we had our first Take Shape for Life seminar. It was a great turnout and those that attended are on their way to healthy long term weight loss. "Five years ago I had a Brain Hemorrhage. With this, came a lot of tests and a lot of bad news concerning my health: I weighed 255 and I was put on medication to control my blood pressure and my cholesterol. I decided to make a life change.
