Why do we gain weight as we age?

So the question I get often; 'Why am I gaining weight as I age?' I am eating the same but gain weight every year. Here is why:

· At any one moment in the U.S. - @50-60-% of pop. We all know the first law about losing weight: burn more calories than you take in. True, however not the whole truth. For most of us, it's just we spend too much time at the trough, however there are those patients who will swear that the small amount of food they're eating should be causing some weight loss.

· The other law we all have to face and deal with is that unless we take steps to exercise on a regular basis we will lose lean muscle mass, which is the furnace where we burn calories and our resting metabolic rate will gradually decline.

It’s a tough battle! After age 20, our metabolism decreases @0.5%/yr, mostly due to losing 5-10# of muscle tissue every decade. This means at age 30, we’re burning 5% fewer calories, 10% at age 40 (in other words, 5%/decade). In other words, you either cut calories as you age or pick up the exercise or both. Not a pretty picture. Do we need to encourage exercise? The chart below is from Talbott's book, The Cortisol Connection.

I was just looking at my blog and realized that i haven't updated it in 3 months. Wow life goes by fast doesn't it. Too fast.

As you may know I have opened an office in Pleasant Grove, UT only 5 minutes from home. I am loving the commute. The gym is 5 min from the office and everything I need is close to home. I love it. More time for family, church, friends, patients, and weight loss clients.

Due to the summer I have slowed down my weight loss consulting but it is time to get in full swing again. School is starting, vacations are over and people are getting back to "normal" life. With that it is a great time to lose weight.

The Biggest Loser

Last night was the season finale of The Bigges Loser. I must admit it is one of my favorite shows.

I think it is because it is a show that changes peoples lives for the better. Not only those on the show but it is a motivation to those who watch it.

This year a 48 year old woman won the competition. She lost over 54% of her body weight. That is amazing.

I hear all the time how men lose weight so much easier and quicker than men. But the last 3 winners on The Bigges Loser were women. Now a 48 year old woman. It just shows you that anyone can do whatever they set their mind to. Here is a link to pic's of Helen, the winner.


The best part about weight loss is that you don't need to get on a TV show to do it. You can do it on your own. With the right nutrition, exercise, and support.

I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day!

I did. I woke up and made my wife breakfast, with help from my kids. I also made her dinner and let her take a nap after church. It was a fun day. I hope all the Mom's out there had a great day.

On Saturday I had a fun day as well. I got a call on Friday night to go water skiing with a good friend of mine, on Saturday monring.

We met at 6:30 am and went to Utah lake. It was sooooo cold. The outside air when we met wat 34 degrees. The water temp was probably 50 degrees. Thank goodness I had a dry suit. So all that got wet was my hands, feet, and head.

Here is what I really loved about this. I haven't been waterskiing in 2 years. This was mainly due to my achilles tendon injury and surgery. Well the last time I went skiing before I tore it I was almost 15 pounds heavier than I am now.

Well needless to say that water skiing at a lighter weight was so much easier. I got up faster and was able to ski longer. It was really great.

One thing I am really enjoying about losing weight is that I am finding it easier to do things now than when I was 40 pounds heavier. Life is easier. It is easier to run, play sports, fit into clothes, go up and down stairs... You get the picture. So what are you waiting for. Summer is so close. You can feel it in the air.

On Thursday April 16 I will be hosting two Take Shape For Life and Medifast Weighloss orientation's and food tasting's. I have had so many people talk to me over the past few days about friends and family who might be interested in starting an effective simple weight loss program, that I have decided to have 2 orientations in my office next Thursday. Anyone is invited to attend. This event is absolutely FREE. They will last about 45 min.

The first one will be at 12:30pm (for the lunch crowd) and the other will be at 6pm for the after work group. You must RSVP to come to this event. I can only fit about 10-12 people in my office at each time. So call early as I know that there are many people that have already asked me about this program.

Daddy Daughter Date!

So this was a fun weekend with Easter and all.

Friday night I took my 2 cute little girls, LibbyAnne 4 and Makenzie 6, on a Daddy daughter date.

Well before I started Medifast my wife bought me a new pair of pants. I tried them on and laughed because I thought there was nooo way I would ever wear them, even when I lost the weight I needed to lose.

Well they are nice pants so I decided that it had been 4 weeks since I tried them on and 3 1/2 weeks since being on the program so i tried them on. To my utter disbelief, THEY FIT!!

I couldn't believe it. I knew I could get into them sooner or later in the waist but I thought they were too small in the legs to ever fit. Well in only 3 1/2 weeks they fit. It was a great day and fun to see. Then I had a great night with my little girls.

I have now registered to run the St. George marathon in October. I said Iwould never run again but I am feeling better than I have in years and when I get to my goal weight I will be 30 pounds less then when I ran it the first time. I think it will be so much easier to run 26.2 miles carrying 30 less pounds. So I am going at it again. I am really excited.
